How to make a Banana Split

For National Banana Split Day, we are celebrating a timeless and classic favourite of ours, the banana split! In Pennsylvania 1904, David Evans Strickler, a 23-year-old pharmacist apprentice enjoyed inventing and experimenting with new soda fountain sundaes in his free time. One summer, he split a banana from stem to stern, and piled three scoops of ice cream between the halves. He topped the ice cream with marshmallow, crushed nuts, cherries, sweet syrups and whipped cream. From this, he out-scooped all competition by creating the infamous Banana Split Sundae we all know and love today!

To celebrate National Banana Split Day, here is our recipe for the best All- American Banana Split:

1 medium sized banana

3 scoops of Porrelli Ice Cream: 2 Traditional Vanilla, 1 Belgian Chocolate

2 tablespoons whipped cream

1 tablespoon chocolate syrup

1 tablespoon chopped walnuts

1 tablespoon chopped maraschino cherries

Step 1

Place the banana into a long, narrow dish. If you have not already, peel the banana, then slice it in half lengthwise. Pop each half of the banana onto each side of the dish and leave room in the middle.

Step 2

Place three scoops of Porrelli ice cream down the middle, between the banana halves. One scoop of our Belgian Chocolate in the middle between two scoops of our Traditional Vanilla ice cream.

Step 3

Drizzle chocolate (or if you want to be adventurous, chocolate and caramel) sauce over the ice cream. If you fancy being really traditional, use the classic complimentary mix of hot and cold by heating your chocolate sauce before drizzling.

Step 4

Add a dollop of whipped cream. You can add a swirl of whipping cream over each ice cream scoop, or you can place it on either end of the banana split.

Step 5

Top it! Sprinkle some chopped maraschino cherries and walnuts on top. If you don’t have walnuts or if you don’t like them, you can use chopped peanuts instead. Alternatively, you can dress this dish up even more by adding sprinkles!

In our opinion, the banana split is easily one of the best classic summer ice cream treats! It blends together the perfect flavour of bananas with the rich and sweet flavours of our ice cream. If we have now successfully inspired your next ice cream indulgence – go bananas!
