2020 is an exciting year for us here at Porrelli, as we get set to celebrate our 95th anniversary!
As a family, we’ve certainly achieved a lot during that time, so what better way is there to mark the occasion than by telling you a bit about our history?
Our story began when founder Gerardo Porrelli immigrated to Scotland from San Biagio, Southern Italy in 1925. Along with his family, he settled in Paisley and it was here that he began to produce delicious ice cream using traditional Italian recipes brought straight from his homeland.
Still very much a family owned business, today the company is led by Gerardo’s grandson Enzo Durante who began as a delivery driver in 1978 when he was just 16! His wife Ines joined the company in 1988 as Financial Director and daughter Serena came on board as a Sales and Marketing Manager in 2010.
Thanks to advances in technology and equipment, in 2008 we were able to build a state-of-the-art ice cream factory on our original site on Lacy Street meaning we could ramp up production to over 6000 litres a day!
This doesn’t mean that we have compromised on quality however, and we are proud to say that to this day we have continued to use Gerardo’s original secret recipe. It is this unique and delicious taste that has helped to ensure that Porrelli are trusted as a high-quality brand throughout the catering trade, in frozen wholesales and in multiple retailers throughout Scotland.
This secret family recipe has also helped us to win numerous industry awards for the delicious and creative flavours we’ve produced over the years.
From humble beginnings, we’ve grown the business into an empire that now serves over 100 flavours of ice cream! We’re sure that Gerardo would be proud and it’s only the beginning. Cheers to the next 95 years!
